Jets down Panthers

The Port Hope Panthers dropped back-to-back Empire junior C hockey decisions to the Amherstview Jets this past weekend.

Saturday night's game at the Jack Burger Sports Complex went to a shootout tiebreaker with the Jets ultimately prevailing 5-4.

After a scoreless first period, the offensive floodgates opened in the second period with seven goals scored, 4-3 in favour of Port Hope. Dan McCarthy, with two, Brett Beckett and Kevin Curridor scored for the Panthers.

A third-period goal by Wade Gordon with just over three minutes to play in regulation time evened the score at four apiece and sent it to an overtime frame, which solved nothing.

Gordon was Amherstview's first shooter in the shootout and beat Panthers' goalie Jory Fuller but that goal was offset by the tally of Port Hope's first shooter Brett Beckett.

The next two shooters -- Brock Patterson for the Jets and Beckett for the Panthers -- were both denied on their attempts but the outcome was determined in the third round of the shootout.

Nick Pascoal made good on his attempt while Port Hope's Kyle Giroux was stopped by Amherstview netminder Zach DeSousa, who had made 33 saves during the regulation and overtime periods.

On Sunday, in Amherstview, the Jets beat the Panthers 5-2 at home.

Pascoal and Gordon each scored twice for Amherstview, which built a 3-0 lead by the end of the second period while Patterson had one, a shorthanded third-period tally.

Jesse Sheppard McCarthy replied for Port Hope in the third, which offset a pair of Amherstview goals.

Port Hope, now 17-9-3 for 37 points and in third place, will look to get back on track this weekend with a pair of home games against the two clubs that were tied for fourth place after this past weekend.

They host the Campbellford Rebels (14-12-3) on Friday night, with a 7 p.m. start time at the Jack Burger Sports Complex. On Saturday, the Panthers welcome the Picton Pirates (15-11-1) to town. Game time is 6:30 p.m.

Picton and Campbellford both had 31 points yesterday, but Picton was scheduled to play in Napanee last night against the league-leading Raiders
